The sermon on Sunday was about loving your neighbour, and washing each other's feet. Jesus got down on his hands and knees and washed the feet of every disciple, including the man he knew would betray him.
It hit me that evening - this is the core of Christianity. If a person cannot love, they cannot have a relationship with God, because God is love. Everything that God has done, does, and will do is motivated by his love for us.
I don't understand, then, why people become so angry when it comes to Christianity. Someone told me the other day that her friend thinks that all Christians are stupid and delusional, and belong in an asylum. He hates the entire religion and everything associated with it, apparently.
I just don't understand. First off, religion is meant to be a personal thing - why does this person care what others believe? Second, what part about Christianity is so infuriating?
I think that people often forget that our society is built upon Judeo-Christian values. Our country's stance on human rights? A result of these values. The abolition of slavery? A movement primarily fueled by Christians. Even the status and freedom that women enjoy can be brought back to Christianity.
I remember one episode of Larry King Live that had Dr. James Dobson on it (the President of Focus on the Family America). Larry was attacking Dr. Dobson on the idea of the ten commandments, and whether he thought all of society should abide by these rules.
But I have to wonder - which of those commandments is it that he had a problem with? Thou shalt not steal? Thou shalt not murder? Honour thy father and mother?
I think people should open their eyes a little bit. To classify Christianity as intolerant is extremely narrow minded. They need to take a look at the core values of the religion and figure out what they think, rather than regurgitating what society has told them to believe.
